Michael JENNINGS - Operational Excellence/ Health, Environment & Safety Department General Manager «Tengizchevroil» LLP
- Mr. Jennings, please tell us about your Company’s priority areas in the sphere of environmental protection, and also about environment-oriented projects.
- There are several key priority areas for TCO in the sphere of environmental protection. reduction, the reduction of effluent discharges from implementing various water treatment improvement projects, continued progress on the remediation of disturbed lands.

- What are your Company’s achievements in its environmental improvement program?
- TCO has invested more than $2.2 billion USD since 2000 on projects and activities related to environmental protection.
TCO is proud to be the first enterprise in the RoK to eliminate all routine flaring of associated gas. This was accomplished with the completion of the $285MM USD Gas Utilization Project in 2009. Other successful projects that contributed to reduced air emissions include upgrades to the demercaptanization units and the upgrade of the crude tank farm with internal floating roof tanks.
A significant water treatment project is in progress at Tengiz. This $145MM project will treat domestic effluent from various locations in the northern section of the Tengiz area and includes a water recycling component that will further treat this effluent to allow its use in place of technical water currently drawn from the Volga River, thereby reducing our use of natural resources.

- What state-of-the-art technologies are used in your Company for reduction of contaminants’ emissions to the environment?
- The newly constructed SGI/SGP facilities included various technologies that reduced environmental impacts. This includes the latest technology for sulfur recovery as well as dry low-NOx technology on the gas turbines. The result was that TCO was able to almost double production while only adding about 30% in additional emissions. These emissions were further offset by other significant reductions achieved in the existing KTL facilities such that our total air emissions in 2010 are only slightly higher than they were in 2004 even though we are producing almost twice the oil and gas.
TCO has also constructed state of the art engineered landfills to eliminate the impacts associated with waste disposal. These landfills utilize a seven layer liner system with discharged water recovery and collection, and a leak detection system.

- What are the main objectives of your supporting the conference within the framework of the exhibition? What practical advantages will specialists get from participation in it?
- TCO is happy to be a proud sponsor for the EcoTech Forum, which will be organized in the frameworks of EcoTech Exhibition. We fully support the objectives of the conference and exhibition to share among technical experts the latest in environmental technology and practices.
Events such as these allow our technical experts to make valuable contacts with their peers in other enterprises as well as with vendors and suppliers of environmental protection technology.
