Tengizchevroil Sponsors EcoTech 2010 Conference

ATYRAU, Kazakhstan, September 20, 2010 – Tengizchevroil (TCO) announced today that it will sponsor EcoTech 2010 on November 3, in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
EcoTech is a main exhibition in the Central Asia Region formatted to attract international and major local companies engaged in collection, transportation and utilization of waste, treatment of municipal and special industrial waste, recycling, water and wastewater treatment, gas treatment and soil purification, control analytical systems and environmental services. EcoTech is being organized by Iteca, an exhibition company in Kazakhstan, and its international partner ITE Group Plc (U.K.). Official support for the event is provided by Ministry of Environment Protection of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ministry of Industry and New Technologies of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ministry of Oil and Gas of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Almaty City Administration, Trade Representation of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Kazakhstan, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Official partner of the exhibition organizers is Kazakhstan Business Association for Sustainable Development (KBASD). Official Partner of the exhibition is Kazakhstan Business Association for Sustainable Development (KBASD). Official partners of the Conference are the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), Kazakhstan Business Association for Sustainable
Development (KBASD), Kazakhstan Petroleum Law Association (KPLA).

During the three-day exhibition period, an EcoTech conference COOPERATION TO REDUCE EMISSIONS. ANALYSIS. QUESTIONS. BEST TECHNOLOGIES AND PRACTICES will be held on November 3, in Bakshasaray Reception Palace, Almaty. The conference will touch upon major topics such as: commitments of the Republic of Kazakhstan under the Kyoto Protocol, reduction of pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere and other issues related to mitigation of environmental impacts.

Tengizchevroil General Manager of Operational Excellence, Health, Environment and Safety Department, Michael Jennings, said, “Over the last three years TCO has been a strong supporter of the EcoTech exhibitions which promote environmental management system development, implementation of advanced environmentally friendly technologies, successful and mutually beneficial cooperation of specialists on environmental issues, and the establishment of business contacts and knowledge exchange. TCO has also supported the concept of holding technical conferences during the exhibition to discuss various topical environmental issues. This year Tengizchevroil is acting as a General Sponsor of the conference. This event will allow experts to present new technologies and concepts as well as share practical experience of theorists and practitioners from nearby countries and regions.”

In 2009, TCO produced a record 22.5 million tonnes of crude oil, while continuing to improve our environmental performance. Total air emissions generated per tonne of oil produced were reduced by 68 percent from 2000 to 2009. In 2009, overall emissions averaged 2.68 kilograms per tonne of oil produced, which was TCO’s lowest rate ever. In 2010, TCO is improving on that record with by averaging 2.08 kilograms of emissions per tonne of oil produced for the first half of the year. Gas flaring volumes have been reduced by 96 percent while production increased by 143 percent.

Since 2000, TCO has invested $2.2 billion on the projects to minimize environment impact. The key projects completed in 2009 contributed to significant emission reduction and include the $258 million gas utilization project and the $176 million crude tank farm project. The gas utilization project eliminated routine flaring at Tengiz and will help reduce emissions by more than 6,000 tonnes per year. TCO has also constructed state of the art engineered landfills to eliminate the impacts associated with waste disposal. These landfills utilize a seven layer liner system with discharged water recovery and collection, and a leak detection system.

“We are proud to be the first enterprise in the Republic of Kazakhstan to eliminate all routine flaring of associated gas. This was accomplished with the completion of the Gas Utilization Project in 2009. Other successful projects that contributed to reduced air emissions include upgrades to the demercaptanization units and the upgrade of the crude tank farm with internal floating roof tanks,” said Azamat Kenzhegariyev, Tengizchevroil Deputy General Manager of Operational Excellence, Health, Environment and Safety Department.

A significant water treatment project is in progress at Tengiz. This $145 million project will treat domestic effluent from various locations in the northern section of the Tengiz area and includes a water recycling component that will further treat this effluent to allow its use in place of technical water currently drawn from the Volga River, thereby reducing our use of natural resources.

Other TCO key focus areas on environmental protection are the reduction of effluent discharges from implementing various water treatment improvement projects, continued progress on the remediation of disturbed lands.

Investments in environmental protection and improvements in plant reliability have also helped TCO to achieve reduction in the volume of sour/acid gas flaring during technical malfunctions by 73 percent from 2000 to 2009. Additionally, recently we achieved a new safety record of 28 million man hours (more than 1,100 days) without a day away from work incident.

TCO will be continuing to invest into the environmental performance improvement programs and projects.
