In the Race to Introduce Eco-Technologies

In 40 years, after the 1973 oil crisis, eco-technologies have come a long way - from enthusiasts’ structures to city designs. On 2-4 November, at EcoTech and WaterTech in Almaty, the focus will be on eco-technologies and eco-services, sustainable development, efficient use of resources, rainwater use by households and industry, and more. And this is not just a coincidence. Green technologies, associated with energy efficiency, ecology and alternative energy are the current mainstream in many industries. Eco-technologies have already become big business. For example, investment in the international alternative energy market totals $120 billion per year. But money is not everything. Humankind obviously has a negative impact on nature and consumes too much.
Eco-technologies and eco-services are the topic of the international exhibition EcoTech, annually held in Almaty for six years. The traditional September dates of the EcoTech exhibition and conference have been postponed to match the dates of the power exhibition and forum Power Kazakhstan. The main topics to be discussed during the EcoTech conference this year include: Kazakhstan’s post-Kyoto obligations, the need to reduce greenhouse gases, the energy and environment strategy under discussion in the country, market development with regards to the greenhouse gas quota trade, associated gas recycling in the oil and gas industry, and processing, resource-saving and energy efficiency in industry and the utilities sector. Power engineers will be able to participate in their traditional forum on 2 November and the following day’s conference entitled Cooperation to Reduce Emissions. Analysis, Questions, and the Best Technologies and Practices.

This year’s EcoTech exhibition is significant for the increased coverage of the exhibition. The following news sectors have been introduced: a showcase of environmental protection technologies from industrial companies’ environmental departments; noise and vibration protection; clean technologies; industrial washing and cleaning; installation and repair of underground utilities using trenchless technologies; EcoLab; and EcoHouse.

Another feature of this year’s exhibition is the co-location of the EcoTech and WaterTech Central Asia 2010 exhibitions. This year, WaterTech Central Asia will be more focused on water problems in agriculture, which is particularly vulnerable to climate change. The exhibition will present technologies and strategies for adapting to climate change, water conservation and management programmes, equipment for preventing water loss, and much more. Traditionally, the business programme is oriented to specialists, and will include seminars and presentations on the following topics: Industrial Park: Investment, Infrastructure and Logistics; Rainwater – A Gift from Nature!; Systems for Household and Industrial Use of Rainwater; and a roundtable to discuss draft Technical Regulations Safety Requirements When Handling Utility Waste.

The combined exhibitions EcoTech 2010 and WaterTech 2010 will be held in Almaty on 2-4 November in Pavilion 9 at the Atakent Exhibition Centre, and present about 50 companies from Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, and USA. The conference will be held on 3 November at Bakshasarai Reception House.

The conference Cooperation to Reduce Emissions. Analysis, Questions, and the Best Technologies and Practices will have about 120 delegates. Tengizchevroil is the General Sponsor of the conference. The main topics of the conference include: The Obligations of the Republic of Kazakhstan as per the Kyoto Protocol: Opportunities and Prospects; Technologies and Practices to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Examples, Results, and Achievements; Air Pollution Reduction: Requirements, Opportunities and Prospects; Technologies and Practices to Reduce Air Pollution: Examples, Results and Achievements.

The exhibition and conference are organised by the Kazakhstani exhibition company Iteca in cooperation with the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), Kazakhstan Business Association for Sustainable Development (KBASD), and Kazakhstan Petroleum Law Association (KPLA). Official support for the project is provided by the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ministry of Industry and New technologies of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ministry of Oil and Gas of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Almaty City Administration, Trade Mission of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Kazakhstan, and UN Development Programme in Kazakhstan (UNDP).
